April is when people get ahead of themselves… It feels like spring, but the soil is still cold, often wet, and not ready for a lot of the work people try to do this month.

If you rush April, you create problems you deal with all season.

The goal this month is simple:
Pay attention and time things correctly.

🌧 Check Soil Before You Do Anything

After the winter we just had, most soils are still holding water.

Before you start:

  • If soil sticks to your boots, it’s too wet

  • If you leave footprints, it’s too early

  • If water is pooling, don’t touch it yet

Working wet soil causes compaction. That affects drainage, root growth, and plant health for the rest of the year.

Let it dry out first.

✂️ Finish Pruning

Early April is usually the end of the dormant pruning window.

You can still prune:

  • Apple and pear trees

  • Blueberry and other fruit shrubs

  • Grapes, if you haven’t already

Focus on:

  • Removing dead or damaged wood

  • Opening up airflow

  • Fixing structure

If buds are starting to open, stop. You’re done.

🌿 Spring Cleanups (Don’t Overdo It)

Most spring cleanups are too aggressive.

You don’t need to cut everything down right away.

Start with:

  • Broken branches

  • Obvious debris

  • Diseased material

Wait on:

  • Cutting all perennial stems

  • Removing all leaf litter

A lot of beneficial insects are still in there. Give it a little time.

🍅 Raised Beds and Garden Projects

This is a good time to install raised beds and build out garden spaces if the ground is firm.

Not if it’s wet.

If you’re planning:

  • Raised garden beds

  • Edible gardens

  • New planting areas

Get the layout right now. Build when conditions allow.

Don’t rush installation just because it’s April.

🌱 What to Start Indoors

April is active for seed starting.

Start now:

  • Tomatoes

  • Peppers

  • Eggplant

  • Basil

  • Herbs like parsley

Make sure you have:

  • Strong grow lights

  • Airflow

Leggy seedlings usually mean not enough light, not bad timing.

🌱 What You Can Plant Outside

Only once the soil is workable and not saturated.

You can plant:

  • Peas

  • Spinach

  • Lettuce

  • Arugula

  • Radishes

  • Carrots

These crops handle cold soil.

Don’t force it. If the soil isn’t ready, wait.

⏳ What to Wait On

Hold off on:

  • Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant outside

  • Heavy planting

  • Any soil work in wet areas

Late May is still the safer window for warm-season planting.

💧 Watch What the Water Is Doing

April is one of the best months to understand your property.

Pay attention to:

  • Where water sits

  • Where it moves

  • What areas stay wet

This tells you where to:

  • Improve drainage

  • Move beds

  • Adjust layouts

Fixing this now is much easier than mid-summer.

Final Thought

April is about timing, not effort.

If you do the right work at the right time, everything gets easier.

If you rush it, you spend the rest of the season correcting it.
